The Holy Spirit in 365 Scriptures by Katheryn Maddox Haddad

Holy Spirit, Katheryn Maddox Haddad, church of Christ, church of Christ Woman Authors, women authors, religious booksAbout the Book:

"There are numerous books on the Holy Spirit, but they are based on only a few Bible verses. This study was not done to prove the author’s or anyone else’s pet assessment of the Holy Spirit. The study was made with the desire to forget all pre-conceived notions and opinions, and discover only God’s opinion.

The Bible has 365 verses on the Holy Spirit and God’s Spirit. This is the only book of its kind to cover all verses. All other books take a few ideas about the Holy Spirit and elaborate on them.
To make sense out of all 365 verses, they were categorized according to what you see in the table of contents in this book ~ the types of people affected by the Holy Spirit.

Within each category, are sub-categories, usually based on how the Holy Spirit connected with each person, and how each person reacted.

The same subcategory terms will sometimes appear in each category of the people the Holy Spirit affected. At first those little words may seem to have no special significance. But as you progressed through them, you will see that even little words like “within” and “upon”, and “full” sometimes had big significance. All those word studies prepare you for the even more dynamic later chapters in the book.
The study is based on the New King James Version of the Bible.

Read through these chapters, not to prove what you already believe, but with an open mind and heart that perhaps you don’t believe in enough things the Holy Spirit does, or you believe in more things than the scriptures actually teach.

Let us be careful that we do not go beyond what is written (I Corinthians 4:6). Now, let us gear up for all things God’s Holy Spirit does, and get ready to be amazed."  (Amazon)

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

When I was eight years old. I read a book that I liked, but I thought I could have done it better. It was science fiction—maybe the first science fiction book I ever read. It was about a little girl who found herself in a strange alternate dimension. I remember that much, but the actual book title escapes me. At that point, I was reading at least 12 books a week, so its not surprising that I can’t remember.

How long does it take you to write a book?

That’s hard to answer. I wrote the first draft of my first novel (400 double spaced pages) on an old manual Remington typewriter in 14 days. I edited it and reworked it for the next 4 years. It has not been and probably will not be published. I saved each chapter in a separate file, and over the years have lost an important chapter. If I ever find it, I will reconsider.

What is your work schedule like when you're writing?

I don’t have a set schedule. I tend to write more at night than through the day, and I try to write a full chapter before stopping. Some days I don’t write at all, others I write two or more chapters. It really depends on my work schedule for my editing work.

Do you have an interesting writing quirk?

I tend to reread the previous chapter before starting on the next one. When my kids were little, they learned to touch my shoulder before talking to me while I was writing. Otherwise, I was so in the ‘zone’ I never heard them.

Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?

Ideas are everywhere. Sometimes it is from something I read. If you write fantasy or science fiction, the tabloids are a good place to look. All the “Elvis is alive” or “Aliens are here” type stories can be fodder for the muse. However, the morning paper, or these days, social media and online articles, are a good source, too. Sometimes, ideas come from a random comment I hear.

What do you like to do when you're not writing?

I read. I like to be creative, too, so I do a lot of crafting like sewing and beading.

What would you tell other Christian women who want to write?

No one is born knowing how to write. It takes practice and a good understanding of grammar. If you need to learn more about grammar, find a good grammar workbook and commit to working through it.

Don’t let anyone tell you that you are not a writer. A writer is one who writes, not one who is told he or she is a writer. Write, write, and write some more. Turn a deaf ear to anyone who does not believe in you.

How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

I have written one book, mentioned above, which is not published. I have started two others, and have written lots of short stories. My stories tend to be either science fiction or fantasy, or a combination of the two. Not by choice, necessarily. That is just what appears when I let my muse play on the keyboard. My favorite is always the one I am writing at the moment.

Do you have any suggestions to help me become a better writer? If so, what are they?

1.       Ignore people that say you have to write what you know. If you don’t know something you want to write about, research! With the Internet and public libraries, there is no reason not to be able to find information you need. Much of the time you will find it free. If you have to pay for it, decide if it is worth having.

2.       If you want to write, write. Wishing and dreaming only gets you wishes and dreams. Action is what gets you to the point you can publish.

3.       Learn what “show, don’t tell” really means. Use the five senses in your writing to let readers see the scene. Don’t tell the reader your character is angry. Show the reader by having your character throw something, yell, or even just curl their fingers into tight-knuckled fists and taking a threatening step toward whomever he or she is angry at, depending on the character and his or her specific personality traits.

4.       Learn what point of view means. Staying in one character at a time is important. It makes the book easier to read. This does not mean you can’t have more than one view point character. It means don’t have more than one view point character in one scene or chapter. Many wonderful books are written with alternating point of view characters in alternating chapters. Doing this lets you inform your reader about how another character feels or what another character thinks without confusing your reader.

5.       Open your favorite book in your genre. Type out the first chapter. Pay attention to how words are used, how images are used, and how feelings are portrayed.  Now find another book by a different author. Do the same thing. Once you are done, discard the pages (if typewritten) or the file (if done on a word processor). You don’t need the pages, but the exercise will help you see how other writers write scenes and dialog.

What do you like to read?

Almost everything. I read science fiction (especially space opera), fantasy, mysteries, westerns, and some of the tamer romances. I also enjoy reading about scientific discoveries (another good place to get ideas), and human interest stories. I like to reread favorite books over and over.

As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?

For as long as I can remember, all I wanted to be was a writer. We had that question come up on the last day of my 8th grade year. Each student had to tell what they wanted to be. I said I wanted to be a science fiction writer as good as Robert Heinlein. My classmates thought it was a joke, but it was really what I wanted.

Fun fact(s).

My favorite color is red. My favorite animals are unicorns and dragons (not real, I know, I know). My favorite author is Elizabeth Moon. When Star Wars first came out, I saw it 17 times in the theater, and have seen it many times since.

Odds & Ends: A Collection of Short Fiction

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I've been writing for a long time, but didn't realize I truly wanted to write fiction until about 2008. I always thought it was out of reach. I was wrong. If you want to write; do it!

How long does it take you to write a book?

Well, that depends. Short fiction can be done in a few hours. I'm still working on my novel.

What is your work schedule like when you're writing?

I have to find time to write. Sometimes I go for days at a time, and then sometimes I don't actually type anything. With that said, my books are always in my mind.

Do you have an interesting writing quirk?

I like to wear a sock monkey hat when I write my fiction if it's cold outside, and when I'm working on a fantasy piece I listen to Dan Gibson, Enya or the The Lord of the Rings Sound Track.

Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?

Depends. One of the stories in Odds & Ends: A Collection of Short Fiction was written because of the riots in Ferguson. Other things just pop in my head, or come out of things I find amusing. I watch a lot of true crime and crime dramas.

What do you like to do when you're not writing?

I love to paint. Painting is relaxing and I just love to feel the paint move beneath my brush.

What would you tell other Christian women who want to write?

Do it! Don't think you can't. If you want to write fiction -- write it, if you want to write non-fiction Bible class materials do it. Believe that you can.

How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

I have written/ am writing six books. My favorite book as of right now is the Collision of Fire and Ice, but it's a work in progress.

Do you have any suggestions to help me become a better writer? If so, what are they?

Yes. Write. Write. Write. Don't be afraid to write something even if it's not great. Just write. And, read.

What do you like to read?

Well, my reading taste is various. I like classics (Dracula), science fiction (Dune), fantasy (Lord of the Rings), crime novels, and thrillers.

As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?

I wanted to be in the Air Force, and then an astronaut.

Fun fact.

My pen name was given to me by a friend and comes from the Lord of the Rings character Arwen Evenstar.

Susan Elliott

Susan Elliott is a poet, fiction and nonfiction writer. She has written several ladies class books, general studies books and poetry books. She operates the site Church of Christ Women Authors, and manages the Church of Christ Women Authors Facebook Page and Group Page.

So, there's the basic stuff about me. Now, let me kick it up a notch. I am a mother of three and married to an awesome gospel preacher. In my free-time (I know what's free-time?) I paint, make jewelry (Etsy store: Excavating Treasure, and Excavating Treasure Blog), and read. I also love speaking on ladies days and teaching ladies class. I am a home school mom, and have lived all over the country. I am also an avid SYFY fan. Yes, I know...I guess part of me refuses to grow up and I guess that's okay. I look forward to hearing from you any chance you get. Will You Be My Friend?: Growing Friends In the Church (A Hearts on Fire Study)

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
I started writing poetry at 9 years old. I still have my poetry journal. I realized I wanted to write religious books after attending the Memphis School of Preaching with my hubby.

How long does it take you to write a book?
Several weeks of steady work.

What is your work schedule like when you're writing?
I concentrate on my writing and push through it. Sometimes I write all day and into the night.
Do you have an interesting writing quirk?
Not really, but I read everything out loud to make sure it sounds good.
Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?
Sometimes it's from Ladies Day events I do. Other times it's because my husband said something I wanted to know more about in his sermon. My book, More Than a Passing Glance: Early Christian Art comes from my love of art. I took several art classes in college and realized that the early Christians had a lot to say, even if it was just in their art.

What do you like to do when you're not writing?
I make jewelry for my Etsy store, Excavating Treasure. A lot of my jewelry is inspired by the ocean, so I like to hunt for the perfect materials and then construct original pieces. I also love gemstones, so I try to use natural stones.

What would you tell other Christian women who want to write?
Write. We have to write. There are not enough women in writers out there, and we have a lot to say. We teach our children, we learn from our experiences, and our writing can help other women who may be facing the same struggles.

How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?
Nine. So far, it's More Than a Passing Glance: Early Christian Art

Do you have any suggestions to help me become a better writer?
If so, what are they? Read. My teacher told me a long time ago that you write what you read. Also, learn to navigate the ropes of Indie Publishing. Everyone has a shot at publishing now days.

What do you like to read?
Science fiction, and fantasy are my favorite reads. I just love the story and getting wrapped up in it.

As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?
Lots of things. I know I wanted to be a cowboy when I was really small.

Fun fact.
I taught my children several Klingon phrases in their home school classes, and I love to sing.
