A Lady's Pocketbook Ministry by Barbara Barnes

About A Lady's Pocketbook Ministry :

The inspiration for this book came from the love my grandmother had for God and for me. She showed her love in many ways that helped my growth in God's Word. My grandmother, Annie Lewis, always carried her purse and Bible everywhere. This study takes the items you carry in your pocketbook every day and gives them a spiritual application. Hopefully, this study will help you grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. All is to the glory of God.

Barbara J. Barnes book can also be purchased at Amazon , Barnes & Noble, and Westbowpress.com.

Study Helps for Writers: The Nations Descended from Noah:Genesis 10

It might be surprising to some to know how much I love studying the geography and history of the Bible. An in depth study of the geography and history of the Bible gives Bible students a greater insight to the people and places of the Bible. Names that were once unfamiliar and unpronounceable become meaningful, and places that previously seemed exotic become as familiar to the student as her own neighborhood.

During my personal study time the other day, I rediscovered Genesis 10. It lists all of the nations that descended from Noah. The following verses come straight from the Bible (ESV), and make a great chart for Bible students. These scriptures are especially useful to those studying Bible history and geography.

Nations Descended from Noah GENESIS 10

Genesis 10:1

"These are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Sons were born to them after the flood."

Sons of Japheth: Genesis 10: 2-5

"The sons of Japheth: Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras. The sons of Gomer: Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah. The sons of Javan: Elishah, Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim. From these the coastland peoples spread in their lands, each with his own language, by their clans, in their nations."

Sons of Ham: Genesis 10: 6- 20

"The sons of Ham: Cush, Egypt, Put, and Canaan. The sons of Cush: Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabteca. The sons of Raamah: Sheba and Dedan. Cush fathered Nimrod; he was the first on earth to be a mighty man. He was a mighty hunter before the LORD. Therefore it is said, "Like Nimrod a mighty hunter before the LORD." The beginning of his kingdom was Babel, Erech, Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. From that land he went into Assyria and built Nineveh, Rehoboth-Ir, Calah, and Resen between Nineveh and Calah; that is the great city. Egypt fathered Ludim, Anamim, Lehabim, Naphtuhim, Pathrusim, Casluhim (from whom the Philistines came), and Caphtorim. Canaan fathered Sidon his firstborn and Heth, and the Jebusites, the Amorites, the Girgashites, thethe Arkites, the Sinites, the Arvadites, the Zemarites, and the Hamathites. Afterward the clans of the Canaanites dispersed. And the territory of the Canaanites extended from Sidon in the direction of Gerar as far as Gaza, and in the direction of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, as far as Lasha. These are the sons of Ham, by their clans, their languages, their lands, and their nations."

Sons of Shem: Genesis 10: 21-31

"To Shem also, the father of all the children of Eber, the elder brother of Japheth, children were born. The sons of Shem: Elam, Asshur, Arpachshad, Lud, and Aram. The sons of Aram: Uz, Hul, Gether, and Mash. Arpachshad fathered Shelah; and Shelah fathered Eber. To Eber were born two sons: the name of the one was Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided, and his brother's name was Joktan. Joktan fathered Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah, Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah, Obal, Abimael, Sheba, Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab; all these were the sons of Joktan. The territory in which they lived extended from Mesha in the direction of Sephar to the hill country of the east. These are the sons of Shem, by their clans, their languages, their lands, and their nations."

Genesis 10: 32

"These are the clans of the sons of Noah, according to their genealogies, in their nations, and from these the nations spread abroad on the earth after the flood."

How to Submit Poetry Online for Publication

Okay, I finished my poem. It's edited, revised and ready for publication, but where do I send it?

There are many online and print journals that accept poetry submissions via e-mail;  in fact, there are many that prefer e-mail submissions. There are certain rules to follow when submitting via e-mail to any journal.

When submitting poetry for publication it is important to know what a journal publishes. Does it print only contemporary Haiku, or only poems written in iambic pentameter? Sending the right poem to the right place will help your poetry to make it past the initial screening.

It is also important a must to know what kind of works (subject matter) the journal normally publishes. For example, if you are submitting to a journal that publishes religious poetry it is best not to submit a poem about your first kiss.

Concentrate on selecting poetry that follows their content tone and subject matter. If the journal doesn't usually print your kind of poetry, it is probably best to look elsewhere for places to submit.

Be sure to familiarize yourself with the journal.
  • Buy a copy of the journal.
  • Read some of the poems online.
  • Check out a copy at the library
  • Or read the latest issues at your favorite book store.
Remember, a little bit of research goes a long way!

Always follow the submission guidelines, and pay special attention to submission dates. Many journals do not read all year, and only accept submissions for certain months out of the year. Make sure you know your dates!

When selecting the journal where you want to submit make sure that it is reputable. Never pay to have your poetry published. They should be paying you, if not in money in copies of the journal!

Serious poets must be aware of scam sites that will publish anyone who has ever picked up a pen. You don't want your work listed with poems that are poorly written. Your poetry should be valued highly as a work of art.

Make sure once you have selected a journal for submission that you keep a folder with all the important details regarding your submissions. I generally have on my laptop several folders. One is marked Susan's Submitted Works, and another marked Susan's Published Works.

Make sure you include specific details about the date you sent your piece to the editor, and the day it was accepted or rejected as well as who accepted it. You may need this information later for biographical information, and you don't want to accidentally re-submit something that you have already published!

Local Meet the Author Event and Book Signing at Polishing the Pulpit, 2015

What a beautiful morning! I don't normally wake as the sun comes up, because I am a night owl. But, this morning the sun was calling my name.

I have to admit that the view from our balcony was also begging me to come work outside. It's so nice and secluded. This morning I hear frogs, birds, and crickets singing. LOVE IT!

Today is another day at Polishing the Pulpit in Sevierville, TN. I am happy to report that I made a few more author contacts yesterday, so aside from book posts from some of your already favorite authors, there will be many new authors and books in the coming weeks.

Polishing the Pulpit is such a blessing to me. I've already gotten to speak to several people I haven't seen in years, and I'm getting to know new people!

If you want to swing by and meet me, I will be in and out of the vendor room. I have a table in the back. There is a large hand-painted story tree sign at my table. (Next one will be hand-painted on canvas!)

Please make sure you stop by. I have all of my books and would love for you to take a look at them. I would also be happy to sign them for you. So, if you purchase one, make sure to track me down.

I am planning a book signing for August 24, 2015 at 2:30 at PTP in front of the fireplace.

Also, Brother Mosher's book, The Book God "Breathed" is available, but the copies are limited. So, I'd get there fast if you want one.

There are also several other book vendors who have many of the Church of Christ Women Authors' Books in stock.

If you're at Polishing the Pulpit and want to know more about Church of Christ Women Authors there is a pamphlet on the table. I will also be glad to answer any questions you may have.

I hope to see you there! And if you're not in the area, maybe I'll catch you down the road!

Have a beautiful day!

"This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it." --Psalm 118:24
