The Treasured Woman: Profiles from Proverbs 31 by Christa Bryant

christa bryant, the treasured woman, old testament studies, ladies books, church of christ, church of christ women authors, women authors, religious booksAbout: The Treasured Woman: Profiles from Proverbs 31 :

"In The Treasured Woman, Christa Bryant brings to life the qualities of the Proverbs 31 woman as she examines them and relates them back to some of the most honored, beloved women in Scripture. This book goes beyond the lofty expectations that Proverbs 31 tends to place upon women, digging deeper into the Word of God to reveal that these “unattainable” qualities can actually be achieved.

In this thirteen-lesson study guide, Christa gives the reader real-life examples of a virtuous woman. You will be re-introduced to women such as Mary, Abigail, Ruth, Hannah, Rahab, and many others—all of whom lived the Proverbs 31 way of life and became treasured women to their families and to God. Questions at the end of each chapter serve to spark additional reflection and discussion. This study will give you the inspiration, confidence, and guidance you need to become a precious gem among the fellowship of believers."  (Amazon)

Genre: Wisdom Literature

More In-depth Information From Christa Bryant:

Why did you decided to write a book on this topic?
I wanted women to realize that the Proverbs 31 woman was not just the June Cleaver image our culture seems to have of her. I wanted her to be real in a way that everyone could relate to her and find ways to emulate her in their personal lives.

What are your goals with this work?
I want to encourage women to be able to live up to the woman God wants them to be, not what the church, society, or culture seems to promote.

Who do you think the target audience is?
Young women from teenagers to older women.

Are you working on any other book at this time?
I am working on a book on confidence and self worth. I hope to take some of the women of the Bible an show how they demonstrated confidence and how Biblical confidence is better than worldly confidence.

Article: Blessings in Disguise by Out of the Ashes Author Sandi Rog

Blessings in Disguise

Sandi Rog

At one point in my life, writing was all I wanted, and I clung to it like a desperate child clings to its mother’s skirt. It was my “escape” from a lonely life of living in another country while my husband worked overtime a majority of the year. Despite having three children, writing was all I had of value. It gave me confidence and self-worth. It defined me. Really, it was the only thing I was any good at, that was really “mine.” Plus, writing was the only thing I had to offer to God, my children, and the world. Or so I thought.

After thirteen years of living in Holland, my husband and I moved back to America barely holding on to the broken pieces of our marriage, juggling three young children who had never studied in English, and climbing out of the refuse we had made of our lives. But one thing was constant, God . . . and my writing. Truth be told, writing had become my idol. I lived, breathed and ate it.

To make a long convoluted story short, after moving back to the States I was diagnosed with MS. This means that anything can go at any moment: vision, the ability to walk, the ability to speak properly, you name it. My biggest fear was waking up blind. By this time, I was facedown in the mud. What good was I? I desperately longed for my heavenly Father’s arms, and further lost myself in writing.
Interestingly, my books were all about “overcoming” through Christ. Overcoming abuse, trials, you name it. They were about forgiveness and remaining faithful to God despite getting beaten to the ground. A good portion of “me” was poured out onto all the pages of my stories.

Just when I thought I’d had enough, after an MS attack of vertigo, they found a mass in my head (I wondered what the “bruise” was that never went away), and I was diagnosed with Stage Four Non-Hodgkins T-cell Lymphoma: Cancer. Truth be told. I was relieved! I was so exhausted from this life and so ready to go home. After all, my mother-in-law could do a much better job at raising my kids than me. Plus, my husband wouldn’t have any difficulty finding a replacement for me. Only thing I begged from him was that he’d choose a Christian. Of course, he “said” he wanted no one but me, yada, yada. Naturally, I didn’t believe him. I just wanted out. And cancer was my ticket out of this miserable, wretched existence.

But during cancer, God showed me my value as a parent and a wife. Who knew I was any good at the things that counted? It was as though God said, “You believe your mother-in-law (MIL) would do a better job at raising your kids than you? Well, have a seat and watch what happens.” I was so sick, my MIL came to America to take care of my family for a year, while I watched from the sidelines, unable to do anything. It was then that I realized I was the best person for my children. Not that she did a terrible job, by any means. It’s just that I had an understanding of them, a connection and bond that she, nor my husband, had. God revealed my value as a mom!

It was also during this time, God revealed that my husband loves me and needs me. You see, my husband and I are very opposite in personality. He isn’t often “spontaneous.” He’s a planner, he maps everything out, and doing anything without “thinking” doesn’t happen often. E-hem. Yes, I often do things without “thinking.” But as I was saying . . . One day during cancer, I was sitting on a chair in the bathroom as my husband shaved my head. I looked at myself in the mirror and saw this strange-looking fat woman with no hair staring back at me. How grotesque! How can anyone love this? But when my husband was done, on impulse, he bent over and kissed my bald head. I always thought he was good to me and took such good care of me during that time because he felt guilty, but in that one moment I knew that he truly loved me. I mean, who would do that? Who would spontaneously bend over and kiss their fat wife on her bald head if he didn’t love her? It was in that moment, God revealed that my husband’s love was true. God saved our marriage!

So, when I got better (which is another story that you can read about here: I Beat Cancer with Vitamin B17 it was difficult to get back into writing. I couldn’t focus. I used to write in chaos, ignoring everything and everyone around me, but now I simply can’t. I don’t want to miss out on any precious moments, no matter how petty. I was also afraid writing would become an idol again. Through much prayer, God has held my hand every step of the way, and while I now know how to put God and my family first, he’s allowed me to write again. I’m taking baby steps, but I’m back on board, and this time, I wrote a light, inspirational romance that won’t make you cry.

God is good. Through the bad times and the good. He also revealed HIS LOVE for me during all of this, and I praise Him! It was through cancer that God brought me from a miserable wretch who believed she was worthless, to a confident daughter of the King.

Has what you been through as a Christian influenced your writing?

Her books:

Her new book, Winning Every Women's War: Overcoming Temptations, debuts January 2016

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

When my English teacher in high school complimented a piece I’d written and read it to the class. It wasn’t the recognition as much as the knowledge that I could write words and others would find them revealing.

How long does it take you to write a book?

The length of time depends upon the content. I try to research and verify facts, and study any scriptures to make sure I understand them as fully as possible in this stage of my spiritual growth. My last manuscript (at the publisher’s now), I co-authored. We wrote for about six months, but we had already taught the material in a women’s class at our home congregation, so we knew the basic content of chapters. Of course, teaching and writing are two entirely different animals. We often speak in passive language, and a book written entirely in passive language bores a reader.

What is your work schedule like when you're writing?

Interrupted! I write in bits and pieces. If I’m on “finish line” (preferred instead of deadline, I arise early before the sun comes up and the phone starts ringing. I’m not sure why my adult children think I want to hear from them at 6:30 in the morning J. My husband and I are at retirement age, but we still operate our business from home, where I write. Our area north of Houston is booming with construction, a real blessing to many and us. We also have five grandchildren who live nearby, and we help with my husband’s 94 year old mother and my 87- year-old Dad and his wife. We worship with a large congregation, and I help with women’s classes there and speak at events. But my life is no busier than others. We are indeed blessed to have good health and stamina.

Do you have an interesting writing quirk?

I really love to nail the right simile or metaphor.

Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?

Ideas are prompted through my senses of vision, hearing, taste, touch, and smell. The sight of a mud dauber led me to explore their habits and I found that the mother lays her eggs on live, paralyzed spiders. I heard a mocking bird trill my phone ringtone. I tasted lavender cookies for the first time. I touched an electric fence. I smelled wassail, and all those heightened experiences led to writing. And usually to a spiritual connection.

What do you like to do when you're not writing?

I love to read….and there’s always housecleaning.

What would you tell other Christian women who want to write

Ask God to guide you if it’s truly your calling. It may not be for pay but for your family, church, women, or introspection. Look for a local writer’s group and join. That’s how I first started. They were so kind and attentive. The Amy Foundation has great resources for the beginning writer, and they are free. They give away thousands in prize money each year to deserving writers who manage to include a scripture and reference in writings for the general public. Find a writer who will mentor them.

How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

I’ve written five with one under contract due out in January 2016. I’ve written more that are taking sabbaticals in my computer. They will emerge when God wants them to, or not. I suppose my favorite is my first book, a compilation of some of my readers’ favorite newspaper columns. I adapted them for the book and wrote fifty-two prayers at the end of each that shows how Jesus life-supports us each day. The prayers don’t end with “In Jesus’ name.” They connect to Jesus by stating exactly how he life-supported me that day: In the name of Jesus, who notices dusty feet. In the name of Jesus, who sought the lost in a cemetery and at a seaside. In the name of Jesus, who brought real character to the family tree. The hardback gift book is titled, The Stained Glass Pickup: Glimpses of God's Uncommon Wisdom .
Do you have any suggestions to help me become a better writer?

When I read work by an author and I cringe because of wordiness, passive writing, not enough explanation, a grammar error, misspelling, or misuse of a word, I become a better writer. I really want to avoid making readers shudder over what I’ve written. One of the complaints in reviews of books, is that the reader was so distracted by mistakes that they quit reading. Most writers have typos and errors. We are practicing getting better. My last book is better than my first, writers get better if they are mindful of improvement.

What do you like to read?

I enjoy reading biographies and Christian fiction, and of course, the Bible. I’m a reader, so I find myself reading cereal boxes, blogs, refrigerator magnets, and road signs. That sense of vision may lead to my next column or blog post.

As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?

Be Elvis Presley’s wife.

Fun fact.

My kitchens always have red in them.

Book Review:

I read this short read rather quickly, but it was phenomenal. I couldn't put it down, and was pleasantly surprised by the twists and turns it took. If you have an extra .99 laying around, I highly encourage you to pick it up. As a side note, I often use Lynn's works when teaching my high school creative writing class. They are great examples of fantastic writing.
